Two areas in your home that can develop mildew quite easily, are your carpets and your furniture. One apartment that I own seems to have a problem with water leaking down into the basement, at least once a year. The leak causes mildew to develop around the place, especially the carpets. To address the problem, what we usually do is to move the carpets and allow them to dry out in the sun. This helps to prevent mildew, but sometimes the mildew takes over. When this happens, I still try and save my carpets because I don’t like having to pay to install new ones.
To do mildew removal and save my carpets from being totally ruined, I use a carpet cleaner and run it over my carpet. Also, I either take them out and let them dry in the sunlight, or else make sure that I have fans running on them at full blast for 48 hours. This will help them to dry and keep them from developing mildew. For mildew growing on furniture, I use a little bit of rubbing alcohol to take care of the mildew, or put my furniture out in direct sunlight. Both methods are really effective in killing mildew.
